Philip Morris' CEO tries to have it both ways; Geoffrey Bible has one audience at Minn. trial; another on Capitol Hill

Article Abstract:

Philip Morris chairman and CDEO Geoffrey Bible was squeezed between legal and political agendas at his Mar testimony in Minnesota's lawsuit against the tobacco industry. The industry has settled claims with 3 states in its efforts to sell legislation giving the industry some immunity from lawsuits and has also made unprecedented admissions to Congress. However, lawyers on both sides know that every concession makes it easier for state lawyers to make their cases.

Plaintiff bar divided by settlements; tiny payouts, big fees hit by public interest lawyers; class action abuse

Article Abstract:

Debate over possible abuses of class actions is increasing in the plaintiffs' bar. Both Public Citizen and Trial Lawyers for Public Justice have attacked class action settlements which result in low recoveries for class members while at the same time relinquishing plaintiffs' rights to individual suits. According to critics of the settlements, judges bear much of the blame because they fail to scrutinize such settlements adequately.
