When NIMBYs attack: the heights to which communities will climb to prevent the siting of wireless towers

Article Abstract:

The wireless communications industry serves nearly 94% of the US population but local residents and their governments often resist the industry's need to erect towers or other hardware required needed to service a growing market. The industry must implement public education programs regarding the safe operation of their systems and local governments must also loosen their arbitrary restraints on the industry's expansion. Without such cooperation the FCC may need to pursue federal preemption of local zoning ordinances under the Telecommunications Act of 1996.

Policing for profit: the drug war's hidden economic agenda

Article Abstract:

Government policy regarding illegal drugs has proved a failure after 25 years because of the forfeiture laws which allow law enforcement agencies to keep the assets they seize. Instead of focusing on slowing the flow of drugs, law enforcement adopts practices by which they gain financially through forfeiture and block grants. Such practices fuel law enforcement corruption and lead to miscarriages of justice.
