Article Abstract:

The trend on the part of investors to use their leverage to make corporations behave in a socially responsible way started in the 1970s and significant progress has been made in the 20 years since then. In the early 1970s, churches and individuals were the only noticeable forces in the social responsibility area. By 1991, even institutional investors with portfolios worth hundreds of billion had started nudging companies to behave differently.

Concern for social responsibility in the insurance industry first became apparent in 1967, with a $2 billion commitment to improve the inner city. In te early 1990s, it is possible to say that this program has enjoyed great longevity and success. The Center for Corporate Public Involvement is the agent of the life and health insurance business responsible for community outreach.
