Privatization of telecommunications in Latin America

Article Abstract:

The privatization of the Latin American telecommunications industry has been marked by a number of approaches, including Chile's incremental efforts and Mexico's comprehensive plan built around the rapid reorganization of TELMEX. Chile's efforts have had limited success due to lack of experience and funding, while Mexico's approach seems to have created the type of competitive environment needed. Telecommunications regulatory agencies, such as in Chile, require sufficient funding, experienced employees, and clearly-defined duties and statutes in order to succeed.

Telecommunications in formerly communist countries

Article Abstract:

The telecommunications industry in Eastern Europe is in a constant state of flux and privatization reforms will only take hold gradually. In the short term, privatization will be extremely expensive, as has been the case in Hungary's privatization of its Matav telecommunications company. Eastern European telecommunications industry reforms are key to the democratic and economic development of these countries, but progress is slow due to the weaknesses in the communications infrastructure. Privatization efforts in Russia, Poland, and Hungary are analyzed.

Telecommunications in the European Union

Article Abstract:

The UK government has moved its telecommunications industry towards privatization by using a US-style regulatory board, an approach which ultimately will prove more successful than France's state monopoly efforts. Although France's reforms have worked out, the UK approach better addresses EU telecommunications issues such as the implementation of technological breakthroughs. The European Commission's directives, which have deregulated many aspects of the telecommunications industry, are discussed.
