The ABA urging a committing of government funds to the Thurgood Marshall Legal Educational Opportunity Program is described. This program encourages the study of law by low-income and minority students. The ABA's congressional testimony pointed out that the number of minority lawyers remained below 10%.

End of stalemate in sight

Article Abstract:

ABA support for reauthorization of the Older Americans Act of 1965, which supports legal assistance and elder rights advocacy programs, is discussed. The Administration on Aging, established by the law, plans and delivers services, and fundng, serving the elderly of all income levels, is provided to the states.

Pulling the plug on executions; ABA's call for death penalty moratorium sparks debate in Congress

Article Abstract:

The ABA Guidelines for the Appointment and Performance of Counsel in Death Penalty Cases are discussed and include provisions such as permitting the use of evidence produced by new technologies such as DNA testing, allowing exonerated people some remedy for false imprisonment, and allowing a jury instruction on the sentence of life without parole.
