Racial injustice and American justice

Article Abstract:

The ABA convened a Task Force on Minorities and the Justice System after the Rodney King Verdict and Los Angeles riots and, since 1986, more than a dozen states have also studied discrimination in their courts and begun attempts to change. Among the problems found in state studies are disparate bails, harsher sentences for minorities than for whites found guilty of the same crime, disproportionate numbers of blacks receiving the death penalty, inadequate legal services for minorities, and underrepresentation of minorities in the ranks of lawyers.

Volunteer American attorneys, judges and law professors have traveled to the Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union under the aegis of the ABA's Central and Eastern European Law Initiative (CEELI) to help these countries form democratic legal systems after their decades under Communism. The King crucible: racism and the American justice system

Article Abstract:

Bar associations and their membership are uniquely qualified to combat racism in the American judicial system and have an increased obligation to do so after the Rodney King verdict and the Los Angeles riots which followed it in mid-1992. The ABA's Board of Governors has approved a task force to take on this mission and it should be able to present a plan at the Aug 1992 ABA annual meeting.
