Remember: lawyering is business; to be a success, you have to be more than good: you have to market yourself

Article Abstract:

Client development is a key part of the practice of law. Such development can be divided into three tasks. First comes making a niche in the market for your practice. Second comes planning systematically and consistently for client development that complements this market niche. Third comes assessing the effectiveness of this client development plan. Client development should complement the firm's specialty and image and should appear in many venues at once. It is important to assess what works, to be willing to innovate and to take risks.

Some of the most gifted New York attorneys are leaving their law firms for employment as investment bankers, attracted both by the big raises offered and by no longer having to bill thousands of hours per year and be available for late-night telephone calls from senior lawyers. Some observers state that the career changes are the sign of a market peak. Investment banks welcome lawyers with qualitative skills and analytical ability.
