Article Abstract:

The conference on 'Age, ageing and ageism in working life' organized by the Marco Biagi Foundation & ADAPT in collaboration with the European Commission, University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, 26 November 2004 was opened by Manfred Weiss who examined age and access to employment. According to the latest figures for the OECD countries the employment rate for 25-24 year olds is 85% whereas for 55-64 year-olds it is 50% or less, with the lowest figure in Hungary (24%) and the highest in Switzerland (68%).

Fraud, mismanagement and nepotism: the Committee of Independant Experts and the fall of the European Commission 1999

Article Abstract:

All members of the Commission of the European Communities resigned following an investigation conducted by a Committee of Independent Experts that uncovered evidence of fraud and mismanagement. The author comments upon the structural deficiencies in the the European Union that contributed to the political mishandling of the situation. Guidelines have been developed to describe the individual and collective responsibility of future Commissioners regarding conduct and policy implementation.
