Working your connections; internet hookups range from the mundane to the space-age

Article Abstract:

There are many different ways of connecting to the Internet, ranging from dial-up modems to digital subscriber lines, ISDN lines, and cable modems. The most advanced is hooking up to a digital satellite, which can receive information at high speeds. The increased security of dial-up connections provides some compensation for their lack of speed and DSL, ISDN, fiber optic or cable modem users may want to consider a "firewall," a device that protects a system from unauthorized use.
