Separate and equal: in a racially divided America, minorities have to empower their own futures

Article Abstract:

Th heyday of school integration occurred from the 1970s through the late 1980s, and today there is increasing racial separation in the schools. Mindful of this fact, many public school systems have instituted Afrocentric curricula, hoping to give African American students an education in which their culture is a key part of the educational experience. Maintaining the integrationist view that black schools are inherently substandard will only keep African Americans from feeling empowered and able to change their own fates.

No: all opinions are not entitled to equal air time

Article Abstract:

Mumia Abu-Jamal's lawsuit against National Public Radio (NPR) frivolously invents constitutional rights where none have ever existed. He claims to have been censored because NPR withdrew its offer to broadcast his commentaries, but he never had a right to that venue, any more than he did before his conviction for murdering a policeman. Charges of censorship obscure his political agenda and mask the mutual attraction between articulate prisoners and a segment of the literati.
