Size does matter, but profits are also crucial

Article Abstract:

There were some losers in the NLJ 250 for 1998, with at least 20 of the law firms seeing declines in lawyers and revenues slipping down or off the chart. These firms experienced lawyer drops of from 3% to 13.6%, as well as matching declines in revenues. Of the profitable firms that lost lawyers, a lawyer drop of less than 3% was the rule. Sliding down the NLJ 250 with them were profitable firms that either were stagnant or raised their lawyer ranks by 4% or more, but achieved a lower ranking because they did not earn enough.
