Article Abstract:

Japanese manufacturers of dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) chips continue to face very difficult trading conditions. Indeed, observers forecast that Toshiba and NEC could soon be the only two DRAM suppliers, with the others focusing on specialist markets such as digital processors. Japan currently holds 30% of the $13 billion a year DRAM market, but this could fall to only 20%. Fujitsu is linking with Toshiba to develop a one gigabit DRAM and make it available by 2002, but this project involves significant risk.
