Homegrown help; employing your kids to work around the office can ease tax liabilities

Article Abstract:

Income shifting is possible for lawyers with children by hiring them to do office work in the practice and deducting their salary as a business expense. Earnings of $4,250 in taxable income result in no federal income tax for 1998, and the rate is 15% for income up to $25,350. Sole practitioners with children under 18 are in the optimal situation, as no Social Security or Medicare taxes are due for the child-employee on any income from the parent's business.
