The Department of Labor's glass ceiling initiative: a new approach to an old problem

Article Abstract:

The Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs began The Glass Ceiling Initiative in the late 1980s with nine 'pilot' corporate compliance evaluations to investigate criteria used for employee advancement. The Secretary of Labor's Aug 1991 Glass Ceiling Report confirmed that there was a level above which few minorities and women in each corporation had been promoted according to the pilot programs' findings. Research shows that only 15% of the work force engaged by 2000 will be white men so US policy must change to take advantage of the new work force's potential.

Discrimination litigation relating to employee benefits

Article Abstract:

Much litigation on issues of sex discrimination in employee benefit plans has taken place since the 1970s. Progress has been made in preventing employment discrimination due to pregnancy, with a number of states mandating that employers provide leave for maternity and childrearing and sometimes reinstatement to the same or comparable job, with a continuation of benefits during the leave period. Progress has also been made in preventing sex discrimination in pension benefits. Progress in preventing age discrimination has been limited.
