The Pace of PACER

Article Abstract:

PACER, a dial-up system permitting Public Access to Court Electronic Records for 60 cents a minute, still presents problems although the number of published judicial opinions on the World Wide Web is increasing. The current system of modems and long-distance telephone calls has many problems, both for the customers and the court employees who must maintain it. Moreover, the courts' requirements for PACER access are far from uniform.

The next generation of Web sites is friendly to client and attorney

Article Abstract:

World Wide Web sites allowing data base technology for updating and modification are the latest innovation. Since the alternative is downloading files to make revisions and using HTML language to make changes, this represents a very user-friendly change. Work must, of course, be proofread, but the whole task is much easier than before. This technology also makes it possible for updating to be spread among several individuals.

As legal information proliferates, pricing, budget problems escalate

Article Abstract:

Law firms purchasing electronic products face pricing problems when selecting a format, whether paper, online, or CD-ROM. As choices proliferate, so also do budgeting difficulties. Most large law firms sign confidentiality agreements, preventing them from disclosing what they pay for Lexis or West services. Reform may come from small firm practitioners, who do not sign such agreements.
