The benefits broker in the marketplace: self-funding of group insurance benefits

Article Abstract:

Self or partial self-insurance funding of employee group benefits are used most often in medical, disability, vision, and dental care plans and can provide employers with many advantages which should be weighed against the disadvantages. Advantages include employer retention of claim reserves, increase in cash flow, exemption from state insurance laws, and elimination of some state taxes. Disadvantages include increased costs, legal requirements regarding equality in eligibility and benefits, legal liability, and complicated renewal and termination issues.
