The joys of diversification: vaccines, condoms, and AIDS prevention

Article Abstract:

AIDS prevention researchers should pour more funds into the development of better condoms and other low-technology contraceptive methods that promote safer sexual practices instead of solely pursuing the development of an HIV vaccine. Although an HIV vaccine remains of critical importance, the condom has proven its worth against the spread of other sexually-transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancy. Thus, more attention should be given to it especially since the prospect of a commercially available HIV vaccine appears light years away.

Accounting for future risk behaviors in HIV-prevention effectiveness models

Article Abstract:

The number of infections averted by HIV-prevention interventions is used in cost-effectiveness analyses and other evaluations of intervention effectiveness. It is important that these models take into account the future risk behaviors of intervention participants, in order to avoid counting 'delayed' infections as 'averted' infections.
