The league leader in legal assists

Article Abstract:

Jeffrey A. Mishkin, the executive vice pres and chief legal officer of the National Basketball Ass'n, heads a department of 16 attorneys and takes a very hands-on approach in working with outside counsel, thoroughly reviewing and editing all legal documents produced. Due to a lack of resources, litigation is only handled in early stages and, if it comes to a trial, then handled by outside counsel. Otherwise, all commercial transactions, trademark and copyright registration work are handled in-house. The NBA has become one of the most recognizable brands globally, and the legal department's greatest emphasis is protecting intellectual property rights.

Gold Rush, thin stakes; U.S. branches face fierce competition from U.K. solicitors, accountants

Article Abstract:

Competition is getting stiffer for US law firms opening branches abroad. The competition comes from British solicitors, a branch of the legal profession interested in foreign practice, and from accountants, allowed in many countries to do routine legal work. US law firms have not lost their interest in foreign competition. A National Law Journal survey found that foreign branches of US law firms increased from 196 to 345 between 1991 and 1995. About a quarter of respondents were trying to obtain new business in the many cross-border transactions going on.
