The new lawyering; Microsoft's Bill Gates looks at computers' impact

Article Abstract:

Bill Gates, CEO of Microsoft Corp, foresees an increasing impact of computer on the practice of law. About two years ago, he started a team at Microsoft to study this impact. Gates believes that competition is forcing lawyers to think about increased productivity, and that computers can help towards this end. Various means of networking such as e-mail and workgroup applications will help, enabling lawyers to readily share their knowledge and skills. The practice of law is based on communications, so technological innovations having to do with connectivity will always interest and help lawyers.

You'll get the picture; videoconferencing saves time and money

Article Abstract:

Videoconferencing saves business travel time and, due to developments in data compression which have greatly reduced costs, also money. Productivity also rises due to reduced travel time. Three levels of videoconferencing are available. Broadcast-quality transmission is still costly enough that it is used mainly by major corporations. Small-group systems may be the best choice for medium-sized law firms, and tabletop videoconferencing is a less costly small group system. Personal systems linked to high-end personal computers will soon provide serviceable performance quality.
