The quest for privacy

Article Abstract:

Privacy advocates had good news in Sept 1998 when the federal administration extended the right to export sophisticated encryption products to insurance companies and other health organizations. This represents a victory for the high-technology industry and the result of nearly half a year of negotiations between that industry and Congress. The paradox of easier protection for the privacy of telephone conversations through digital encryption and easier eavesdropping is a result of technology's improvement.

Encryption takes center stage: is government a trusty neighbor?

Article Abstract:

The Secure Public Networks Act would, if passed, in its Senate version require people to deposit a copy of their digital private keys with a government agency, while the House version lacks the requirement for a government key escrow but includes punishment for the use of encryption to further a felony. Some feel that it is just the lack of a strong encryption system which is keeping legitimate Internet commerce from expanding, but civil liberties partisans see the bill as too much of a privacy threat.

None of your business

Article Abstract:

Regulations easing the export of data encryption software and and a French announcement dropping burdensome licensing requirements for the software are encouraging signs for privacy protection. Problems with encryption, however, include how much time it takes to decrypt messages and problems storing data on an encypted server. Significant privacy intrusions encryption cannot prevent are mentioned.
