Timmmberr! How two lawyers and a spotted owl took a cut out of the logging industry

Article Abstract:

The Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund won key victories in environmental law with its fight to curtail logging in the Pacific Northwest. The Fund's strategy was three-pronged: endangered-species protection for the Northern spotted owl, the slowing of Forest Service timber sales until better habitat protections could be devised, and forcing the Bureau of Land Management to weigh the impact of logging in Oregon on owl habitats. Their fight received executive support when the Clinton administration unveiled a plan on July 1, 1993, which purports to balance the interests of loggers and environmentalists.

The Legal Services Corp (LSC) faces dire economic straits due to congressional cutbacks and may no longer exist by 1998. Between 300 and 400 LSC offices will close in 1996, hundreds of LSC lawyers face dismissal and one-third less cases will be handled. Many LSC offices have instituted salary cuts and hiring freezes.
