Too many scares - food safety issues are coming to the boil

Article Abstract:

The European Union sees food safety as a critical issue in the 21st century because of its links to consumer and producer confidence. The new European Commission will have food safety as its main objective and it plans to ensure that food labelling is clear so that consumers can make properly informed choices. Among the new measures to be taken will be a single food hygiene regulation, updated laws on food additives and contaminants, and support for an independent European Food Agency.

The European Commission is aware that member states of the European Union have vastly different marketing and advertising practices. It plans to quantify a number of disparate areas including prices, telephone or mail advertising and financial services. It seeks to improve commercial communications under single market conditions but acknowledges that theresome differences due to national differences in culture.
