Towards effective stakeholder dialogue

Article Abstract:

Sustainable development requires that a company's performance be valued positively by the stakeholders. The dilemma of continuity and growth can be resolved by creating a way that a new social contract can be ultimately drawn up by means of a dialogue between the stakeholder and the organization.

Stakeholder theory hinges on appeals to management to do the right thing. The issue of stakeholder rights and the feasibility and potential of firmer alternatives to the established voluntarist stakeholder model is explored.

The article suggests that small business competitors are among the small business's stakeholders, and that the business has a moral and ethical duties to its competitors as well as to owners and stockholders.
