Trade policy

Article Abstract:

The value of the European Union's international trade reached $1.54 trillion in 1996, with the EU the biggest trading bloc worldwide. The EU operates several trade weapons, including the commercial defence instrument, the safeguard clause, countervailing duties and the anti-dumping regime. The World Trade Organisation (WTO) oversees the 1994 Uruguay round international trading rules, with the WTO expected to ultimately incorporate almost 100% of world trade. The EU occasionally loses disputes with the WTO, such as in the case of banana imports.
