Article Abstract:

The shift in the legal profession's balance of power from New York City to California's Silicon Valley is discussed. Silicon Valley lawyers combine legal advice, business consulting and venture capital analysis. The combination of legal and consulting services makes traditional hourly billing difficult and calls for innovative billing.

The chat rooms started by associates unhappy with their salaries are discussed. Some law firms have filed libel lawsuits against John Doe defendants when they made comments a shade too derogatory. Some chat rooms have in their specificity and currency evolved into a kind of online union hall.

Trickle-away economics? Cost of high first-year salaries may be borne by pro bono recipients

Article Abstract:

Issues regarding the rapidly rising salaries for beginning lawyers are discussed. There is both cautious optimism and pessimism at the likely effect of the salary spiral on the public service sector, with some claiming that pro bono practice will suffer when fails to be a source of potential revenue for the firm.
