Updating our ethics rules

Article Abstract:

The ABA's Commission on Evaluation of the Rules of Professional Conduct, also called the Ethics 2000 Commission, will perform a comprehensive review of the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct in light of societal developments and those in the legal profession since the first adoption of the rules in 1983. Commission members include judges, law professors, civil and criminal law practitioners, corporate counsel, and even a nonlawyer. This varied membership hopes to ensure a broad spectrum of opinion. The Commission hopes to submit its report to the ABA Annual Meeting in 2000.

Ensuring high-quality education; accreditation of law schools is one of the ABA's most important projects

Article Abstract:

The ABA considers the accreditation of law schools to be a core function and the predecessor of the US Department of Education recognized the Council of the ABA's Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar to be the national accrediting agency for law schools in 1952. There are, in late 1996, 180 ABA-approved law schools. The council's Accreditation Committee has members of the public, judges, practicing attorneys and law professors among its membership. Its work is carried out under ABA Consultant on Legal Education Dean James P. White.

Lending freedom a hand: CEELI brings American legal know-how to Bosnia-Herzegovina

Article Abstract:

The ABA's Central and East European Law Initiative (CEELI) shares with a troubled region of the world the American legal profession's experience with the rule of law. The new democracies of Central and Eastern Europe and the new states which were formerly part of the Soviet Union receive help in devising democratic legal systems. The CEELI in its six years of existence has accomplished much and its efforts have been much appreciated in a part of the world which has endured much suffering.
