Values for probation, society and beyond

Article Abstract:

Probation services, especially in England and Wales, should adopt methods that are more restorative. They should support victims and subject offenders to restorative solutions for their offenses whenever possible. Probation services should use the concept of reintegrative shaming to deter offenders from further criminal acts by exposing them to rebuke while acknowledging their basic decency and worth. Offenses should be viewed as disputes between community members and community solutions should be encouraged. Establishing peer mediation in schools would pave the way for such a probation system.

After homicide: divided by systems: a comparison of health service and probation service management of people who have killed

Article Abstract:

Psychiatrists and probation officers should work cooperatively when making recommendations to the court as to whether a person convicted of killing should receive probation or mental health management. Lack of access of information between the two disciplines has led to inappropriate sentencing, supervision, and mental health care of the offender. Evidence shows a larger percentage of offenders are in need of mental health care than actually receive it in the modern criminal justice system.
