Voices from the other side; accounting firm calls for changes in lawyer conduct rules

Article Abstract:

The ABA Commission on Multidisciplinary Practice is studying the impact of creating multidisciplinary law firms, primarily through mergers with accounting firms, and has been holding hearings on the issue since Oct 1998, with a report expected by the ABA House of Delegates by Aug 1999. Advocates of such law firms say they would provide one-stop shopping for business clients and point out that the current legal ethics rules are outdated and make difficult to offer efficient and cost-effective services.

Lawyer, go home; firms negotiating multistate deals should take heed of California decision on unauthorized practice

Article Abstract:

The California Supreme Court cited unauthorized practice of law codes when it voided the attorney fees for a New York firm which negotiated a settlement for its California client with another California company. Both companies operate in many states other than California. The court stated that a lawyer not present in California can still violate the unauthorized practice laws, blurring the circumstances regarding when an out-of-state attorney can represent a California client.
