Vox populi; the public perception of lawyers: ABA poll

Article Abstract:

Hart Research Associates conducted an ABA-commissioned poll on public perceptions of lawyers. Results were mixed. Respondents found lawyers most lacking in the areas of caring and compassion and ethics, both in general and in legal advertising. There was also a perception that lawyers are greedy. Well-educated members of the upper middle class were more likely to have poor perceptions of lawyers than the lower classes. Respondents had in common a desire for court congestion and delay to be reduced. Stricter ethical standards and enforcement thereof were also a high priority.

Rebuilding the public's trust; working toward an improved justice system and renewed respect for lawyers

Article Abstract:

The ABA will address public dissatisfaction with lawyers and ways to address it by reforming the judicial system with a second Pound Conference at the time of Law Day 1994. Specific issues addressed will include court funding, access to justice, children's issues and discrimination in justice administration. This conference will supplement ABA efforts to reform justice administration already in progress.

Did the lawyers win? Political gloom lifts a bit from organized bar leaders at conference

Article Abstract:

ABA leaders gathered shortly after the 1992 presidential election to address the negative public image of lawyers and what might be done about it. Discussions showed that legal issues discussed during the election campaign, such as tort reform and the war on drugs, were not likely to go away. Attendees felt that such meetings might be useful in countering the negative public perception of lawyers.
