What is in a name? Regulation of electrical and electronic products

Article Abstract:

The European Community's two directives on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) and on the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical equipment (RoHS) are viewed as a high-water mark of Community environmental product regulation. The state of transposition of the two directives, what 'electrical and electronic equipment ' is regulated, and the issues to be resolved in environmental product regulation are discussed.

Advanced informed agreement and biosafety - the elaboration, functioning and implications of AIA in the Cartagena Protocol

Article Abstract:

Some of the basic provisions of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety to the Convention on Biological Diversity (BSP) that was formed to help ensure protection in the field of the safe transfer, handling and use of living modified organisms (LMOs) are analyzed. The implementation of the Advanced Informed Agreement (AIA) procedure and the provisions for risk assessment and decision-making are emphasized.

The equator principles: The voluntary approach to environmentally sustainable finance

Article Abstract:

A voluntary code of environmentally responsible project financing by commercial and investment banks, known as the Equator Principles, is examined. The demand that the Principles make of lenders is explained and their adequacy for the promotion of environmentally sustainable finance is assessed.
