What role for parole? Moves afoot to abolish it but critics warn of overcrowding

Article Abstract:

Abolishing early parole caught on with the public dismayed by violent crimes committed by paroled criminals and the list of states abolishing early parole has grown to more than a dozen since 1984. However, New York governor George Pataki's plan to keep criminals imprisoned for their full terms may be in danger as critics question whether abolishing parole may be the best remedy for a state plagued by prison overcrowding. Critics claim that, whether parole exists or not, inmates end up being released early from overcrowded prisons .

Article Abstract:

Problems such as the company's thin capitalization should have warned of what was to come.
