Disclosure of an adoptee's HIV status: a return to orphanages and leper colonies?

Article Abstract:

A policy for the disclosure of the HIV status of potential adoptees needs to be developed. Currently, the adoptive parents' right to know the health status of potential adoptees is conflicted with the confidentiality laws forbidding disclosure of HIV infection. The issue is further clouded by the advance of adoption agency malpractice claims. Requiring that all infants up for adoption be tested for HIV and that this information be disclosed to prospective parents would be the most humane solution for all involved.
