College wins right to keep NCAA response letter secret

Article Abstract:

The Alabama Supreme Court ruled in Birmingham News Co. v. Muse that Auburn University President William Muse was not required to disclose the contents of the response letters the university sent to the NCAA in response to a probe into payments made to a football player. Muse argued that confidentiality should be maintained because witnesses only came forward under a promise of confidentiality. The newspaper argued that under the confidentiality exception to the Alabama public records laws the confidentiality agreement must be balanced against the public interest.

Names, addresses on state contractor's payroll ruled open

Article Abstract:

The Wyoming Supreme Court found in Wyoming Department of Transportation v. International Union of Operating Engineers that the state agency failed to demonstrate any basis for restricting access to the payroll reports of private contractors working on state and federal projects. The Department of Transportation argued that three state Freedom of Information Act exemptions applied to required state and federal wage reports. The Supreme Court ruled that the public interest in government activities outweighs any privacy concerns.
