Court rejects plaintiff's bid for secrecy

Article Abstract:

The US Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit has ruled that a plaintiff's desire for anonymity because he did not want his alcoholism made public was insufficient cause to allow him to file his case under a pseudonym. The plaintiff argued that anonymity had been permitted by courts so plaintiffs would not be compelled to disclose intimate and secret information, but the court stated that alcoholism is not considered to be such information.

Judge ejects cameras in governor's trial, despite parties' consent

Article Abstract:

The Alabama Supreme Court in Ex parte Courtroom Television Network declined to enforce a writ allowing cameras at the trial of Governor Guy Hunt. The trial judge had ordered cameras to be removed after a tied jury vote on the issue of filming the trial. The judge had, however, merely informed jurors of their right to object to the cameras and not that the media could not film members of the jury.

Judge seizes, destroys reporter's notes

Article Abstract:

The Michigan Court of Appeals has ruled that trial court judges cannot bar journalists from taking notes during a criminal trial but may bar still photography at their discretion. The court stated that only 'extraordinary circumstances' which might harm a defendant's right to a fair trial could justify restraining journalists newsgathering techniques.
