Motor vehicle registration records, once used by journalists to reveal public misconduct, is being limited by such legislation as the Drivers Privacy Protection Act. The public demands to enhance privacy may see a move to close voter registration, property tax, and land transaction records.

Congress can regulate release of drivers' records: high court overturns challenge to Driver's Privacy Protection Act

Article Abstract:

The US Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of the Drivers Privacy Protection Act in Reno v. Condon, ruling that Congress did have the power to impose the law on the states. Journalists' arguments on how this information has served public interests were mostly ignored.
