Conrad's bureaucrats: agency, bureaucracy and the problem of intention

Article Abstract:

Joseph Conrad uses bureaucratic figures in his works to reflect the importance of new forms of socio-political organizations created by the monopoly of capitalism. His novel 'Hear of Darkness' criticizes the inhumane system in the Congo Free State while 'Nostromo' deals with the problem of agency. The latter novel reveals how the bureaucratic order of modern history complicates the issue of assigning value to individual human activity. Conrad's 'The Secret Agent' on the other hand, is a comic examination of the bureaucratization of human relationships in late nineteenth-century Europe.
