Courting ruin: the economic romances of Frances Burney

Article Abstract:

The works of Frances Burney, an 18th-century novelist, show a trend among courtship novels to question the economic supply and demand that underlies courtship decisions, making commerce the dominant influence on society. The novels also reveal a political protest that extends far away from domestic life and the writing of women. The contest between the written law and the overriding law of supply and demand is expressed in Burney's novels.
