Modernization and the decline of press freedom: Liberia 1847 to 1970

Article Abstract:

The process of modernization and industrial capitalism in Liberia during 1847-1970 has failed to positively influence press freedom. The modernization paradigm suggests that increasing modernity leads to greater freedom of expression. Although Liberia experienced economic prosperity in the period, its press enjoyed freedom only till 1916 due to republican foundations of the state. However, changes in the political structure and culture since 1916, has led to press censorship, legal and otherwise. Modernization in the Liberian context has failed to be the determinant of civil liberties.

Frederick Douglass's 'My Bondage and My Freedom' and the fugitive tourist industry

Article Abstract:

The journeys of fugitive slaves, as narrated by Frederick Douglass in 'My Bondage and My Freedom,' are a reflection of the slave's struggle when fleeing from bondage to freedom. The world of the plantation was limited, and tourism was symbolic of flight and an escape from slavery. Douglass advocated the abolition of slavery and apartheid practices as a traveling agent. The barren landscape of the agricultural South mirrored the oppression of slaves, whereas the industrial North was a symbol of freedom. A trip by ship to England brings more freedom than what is experienced in America.

Transformations in Mexico lead to new, complex stories

Article Abstract:

Mexico's economic resurgence has provoked political instability and unleashed opportunities for investigative reporting, despite persisting co-optation and censorship. Official openness has allowed media access to confidential information as also the dissemination of fraudulent documents and gossip. Media competition over compromising scoops should guard against leaks, and develop strategies to verify official information. Under such conditions, the promotion of US-Mexican media cooperation on bilateral issues, such as drug trafficking and immigration, will be mutually beneficial.
