Invigilating 'Our Mutual Friend': gender and the legitimation of professional authority

Article Abstract:

The novel 'Our Mutual Friend,' written by Charles Dickens in 1864-65, is different from the other Dickensian novels. The plot has certain instances which present a clear demarcation between the role of a woman at home and in the intellectual arena, particularly in the public educational institutions. The relationship between society and the educated professional worker is significant from the point of view of the changing economic system during the Victorian era.
