Hidden agendas: when State legislators do public work for personal gain

Article Abstract:

The Center for Public Integrity conducted an investigation and found widespread deficiencies in the very laws that are designed to maintain the public's trust in the democratic foundations of law-making institutions. It was found nearly half the states received failing grades as lawmakers could hide significant categories of information about their private financial interests from the public, including three states where lawmakers do not have to file outside-interest disclosure reports of any kind.

Article Abstract:

A councilman from a small Los Angeles area city was subjected to criminal investigations after it was known that he had tried to use his political influence twice to get his son out of trouble with the law. Investigations and internal police department memo revealed that the hired chief of the Culver City police department had ordered the arresting officer to omit all information about the councilman's conduct from the official report.

Charity accountability: scrutiny shows leading environmental group cut insider deals, drilled for oil in sensitive area

Article Abstract:

The Nature Conservancy, worlds biggest environmental organization misappropriated the funds received through charity for a long time, which was studied through systematic efforts to extract information through the employees and company documents. Although the conservancy refuted the charges against it, within due course of time, many of such malpractices were reversed, thus regaining confidence of members of the organization.
