"Let me make the novels of a country": Barbauld's 'The British Novelists' (1810/1820)

Article Abstract:

Anna Barbauld's 50-volume set 'The British Novelists,' published in 1810, included works with diverse political and aesthetic approaches, including books by women. Walter Scott, whose 1821 literary history would come to dominate scholarship, tended to ignore the work of political dissenters and of women authors.
