The game of the rat: A.E. Van Vogt's 800-word rule and P.K. Dick's 'The Game-Players of Titan'

Article Abstract:

The article explores the narrative shunts used by science fiction author Philip K. Dick. It is argued that he uses these shifts in narration not to reactivate a lagging storyline per A.E. Van Vogt's 800-word rule, but rather to create textual mazes that challenge readers' mindsets - the game of the rat.

LSD, Lying Ink, and Lies, Inc.

Article Abstract:

Philip K. Dick is reputedly known as an acid-crazed visionary, which was more the result of his self-publicity than his particular drug habits. He repeatedly discussed his LSD use in fanzine articles and letters during 1960 and incorporated it as a plot device in a novel that was to become Lies, Inc.
