And now, over to the travel unit

Article Abstract:

Traffic and pollution problems are highly evident in central areas and change would seem most plausible in city centres. The latest PPG13 on transport encourages more emphasis on existing centres, but many towns and cities are having to compete with peripheral developments. Although by-passes have a limited role to play, road building is not the answer and there is a move towards integrated traffic management. Consequently there is a need to change to more environmentally friendly forms of transport, such as light rail systems, electric buses, and cycle routes.
