Meeting of the Board of Directors of SCS

Article Abstract:

The Society for Computer Simulation held the annual meeting on July 13, 1983 in Vancouver, British Columbia. International and regional officers were elected; Walter Karplus was re-elected president. Two new editors were appointed for the magazine, 'Simulation.' Announcement was made of new affiliation agreements with Gesellschaft for Informatik of Germany, and Association Francaise D' Intellegence Artificielle et des Systemes de Simulation (AFIAS) in France.

Proposed form 5500 revisions

Article Abstract:

The Internal Revenue Service, the US Department of Labor and the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation have presented a proposed amendment of the Form 5500 series. The revision is aimed at simplifying the yearly return/report forms submitted for employee pension, welfare and fringe benefit plans. The altered Form 5500 would be a one-page main form and 13 schedules. Upon approval, the new Form 5500 would take effect starting on or after Jan 1, 1998.

The lost generation of fiber optics

Article Abstract:

The concept of fiber optics has been proposed even in the 1920s but it took 30 years before it gained popularity in the 1950s. Clarence Weston Hansell, Heinrich Lamm and Norman French have all thought of the use of fiber optics in the 1920s. However, it was only after the war that it gained popularity.
