The study of science fiction: a modest proposal

Article Abstract:

Critical studies of science fiction (SF) require that the genre be differentiated from other types of literature, including fantasy. The genre presents as well as represents ideas on the possible directions science may take and its probable products and their consequences. It also is the only genre which has directly affected or influenced other fields of knowledge outside literature. It has been sourced by futurologists, science teachers and even environmentalists. Thus, a better way to study SF is to relate it to the fields that it has influenced.

Farewell to the master: standing in for Tom Clareson, spring 1993

Article Abstract:

A young assistant professor recounts how she was invited by the English Dept. at the College of Wooster in Wooster, OH, to fill in on short notice for science-fiction scholar Thomas Clareson who suddenly fell ill. The course mostly consisted of class discussion of the nine novels that Clareson had selected for the reading list. The experience taught her a great deal about teaching, about science fiction itself and about teaching science fiction.
