'Unsettling' defaults spur reform: DOT IG

Article Abstract:

Kenneth Mead, Transportation Department Inspector General recently told the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee that the Maritime Administration's (MARAD) Title XI loan-guarantee program experienced nine defaults in five years. According to a chart accompanying the article, MARAD paid out over $400 million to cover the defaults, but recovered less than $88 million. Mead stated that concern exists that additional defaults will occur given the current US economic recession.
