A Society of equals

Article Abstract:

The Royal Television Society (RTS) has seen an increase in the number of women members to 25% and has appointed its first female chair, Granada Joint Managing Director, Andrea Wonfor. She developed the children's drama Byker Grove and has worked on shows such as The Word and Drop the Dead Donkey after a career in youth television. The RTS presents awards on a yearly basis to the broadcasting industry and Andrea Wonfor would like to see the inclusion of satellite and cable professionals. She sees the society as a forum for the television industry.

Playing to a younger audience

Article Abstract:

The Royal Television Society (RTS) is actively seeking out the membership of young broadcasting professionals. The programme of workshops and master classes run by the RTS are considered very helpful for new industry entrants. Located at the Groucho Club in London, the events are held for up to 80 people and speakers are previous award winners. By encouraging young people, the society is injected with new life and innovative ideas. The events also promote networking which is invaluable to people starting a career in television.

He who hesitates has no audience

Article Abstract:

Many young people are now becoming media consumers in other ways than just through television. Broadcasters are having to compete increasingly against video games, CD-Rom and the Internet, and are already losing their audiences of the future to these alternative forms of entertainment. In the UK, broadcasters are failing to follow the example of their US counterparts in developing new ventures which combine television and online services.
