A bit of fluff

Article Abstract:

Many documentary makers are starting to express concern about the commercial constraints under which they are forced to operate, which they see as preventing them from making serious, hard-hitting documentaries which will probably not attract large audiences. They fear that concern about audience levels will increasingly mean that documentaries will have to focus on populist subjects, forcing out quality programming.

Pay and dismay

Article Abstract:

The UK television industry is dominated by large organisations which are offering fewer full-time jobs than in the past, according to a report from the British Film Institute (BFI). Many younger producers are freelance, often working very long hours for low pay. There is a surplus of potential employees, and this makes those who are offered employment willing to accept poor conditions.
