BskyB has attempted to acquire a news station before, and has assembled a consortium to again bid to acquire a news contract from ITN. The consortium must follow a rule of the 1990 Broadcasting Act that no shareholder can own more than 20 percent of the company, and ITV chiefs Charles Allen of Granada Media and Gerry Murphy of Carlton Communications have communicated to sources they prefer ITV to own ITN.
