Merton complaints upheld

Article Abstract:

BBC 1 was reprimanded by the Broadcasting Standards Commission (BSC) over racist remarks made by Bernard Manning during the initial telecast of "The Mrs. Merton Show" on March 19, 1998. The BSC said Manning's remarks, which were part of his response to the question why he used racist materials in his performances, were beyond the acceptable boundaries of taste and decency. The regulator also determined that Mrs. Merton's method of interviewing might not have been the proper approach for Manning, who is well known for his racist views. The BSC's action was in response to the complaints of 12 viewers.
